If you or a family member are among the millions of people suffering from heartburn, acid reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), you are dealing with discomfort that impacts eating, sleeping, and other aspects of daily life. In Acid Reflux & Heartburn In 30 Minutes, author, doctor, and Harvard Medical School Professor J. Thomas Lamont, M.D. uses plain-English explanations and case studies to explain the basics of heartburn and acid reflux, from causes to treatments. Topics in this acid reflux hardcover book include:

  • How your stomach works
  • How reflux occurs
  • Heartburn symptoms
  • Modern methods to diagnose acid reflux
  • Trigger foods to avoid and acid reflux diets
  • Lifestyle changes for reflux control
  • Acid reflux pillow, bed, and sleeping tips
  • Antacids for heartburn relief, and other heartburn treatments

The author also describes four cases involving heartburn and acid reflux. Through the stories of an obese patient, a new mother, a 64-year-old suffering from severe acid reflux, and a college student, you’ll learn how heartburn and GERD impact the lives of ordinary people, the types of treatment that are available, and what the road to recovery looks like. While some patients experience heartburn and other acid reflux symptoms on a daily basis and despair that they will ever recover, there are in fact a range of acid reflux treatments that can offer relief.

Acid Reflux & Heartburn In 30 Minutes is not a do-it-yourself guide—a doctor is needed to diagnose and treat serious cases of acid reflux and GERD. However, this acid reflux book can help you understand what your doctor is recommending and why. If you or a loved one has acid reflux, Acid Reflux & Heartburn In 30 Minutes can be an invaluable and expert resource to help you understand and deal with heartburn and acid reflux symptoms.

As a longtime GERD sufferer and one who has done every ill-advised activity described in this book, I offer a few observations on the quick read.

First I wish this had been published years ago. Dr. Lamont has done an outstanding job of refining the tedious medical terminology down to a layman’s level. This is one of the primary advantages of this publication – plain English discussions about GERD and heartburn (HB) in general.

The publication contains understandable explanations and descriptions of the digestive system and components that are involved in GERD and HB coupled with an excellent discussion of the causes and triggers for both and provides an extensive write-up on what can be done and if they should be done.

The author uses four case studies that detail the many faces of GERD and HB, meds that are used, the effectiveness of one over the other, surgeries that can be employed, and effective alternatives to surgery. In addition to the why of GERD and HB he discusses diagnosis and treatment of both. The book covers when meds should be taken (time of day), when surgery should be considered, alternatives such as LINX device ( a magnetic esophagus wrap around), as well as the advantages and disadvantages of both. There is an excellent glossary, resources section, and a comprehensive index.

I have learned more about my condition by reading this book than I ever learned from my physician. If you suffer from HB or GERD you need this publication. If you’re going to your physician with stomach acid problems this book will help arm you and provide you with the knowledge and ammunition you need to deal with your issue. This book is wonderful.
